Choosing a Satellite TV Antenna

Of course, to receive programming via satellite you will neen to have a satellite tv antenna. In that sense, satellite is no different than older analog broadcast television where those ugly, wirey looking contraptions seemed to sprout from every rooftop in the neighborhood. Today, the satellite TV antenna comes in a compact dish, and doesn't need to reach the clouds from your roof in order to operate properly.

You may choose between indoor and outdoor satellite TV antennas. Usually, indoor antennas are smaller and intended to be located adjacent to your television set. Outdoor antennas, on the other hand, are larger and will be installed on the exterior of your house.

As a general rule, satellite TV antennas with greater surface areas are better equipped to receive television signals. This is not always the case however, since the capacity of reception largely will depend on where you are located. Most outdoor satellite TV antennas perform better compared to the best indoor antennas in the market. Outdoor antennas have size and height advantage. In addition, signals that travel to an indoor antenna may be affected with the walls, floor, construction, home appliances and movement in your home.

Improving Reception of Indoor Satellite TV Antennas

Reception will be enhanced with electronic amplification if you are using an indoor antenna due to height and size disadvantages compared with an outside antenna. This amplifier can be automatically built into the antenna or it can be purchased separately and installed later, between the television and antenna. When you install an amplifier into an outdoor satellite TV antenna, this amplifier is called “pre-amp or preamplifier”.

Keep in mind that there sometimes is a catch 22. Although you can improve the reception and increase signals, amplifiers can also amplify the noise, which can sometimes make the reception worse than it was before.

In the past, satellite TV did not afford access to local TV programming. That problem has been solved with a new generation of off-air satellite TV antennas that can provide you with high-quality signals from your local TV stations directly into your satellite TV service by just clicking a button on your remote. However, be aware that when you install this kind of antenna, you have to position your antenna correctly, taking into consideration the distance of your antenna from the source of television signals and possible obstructions that may affect the reception of signals.

Remember that accessories such as an external amplifier for your satellite TV antenna, whether it may be indoor or outdoor, with possible exceptions, can strengthen your TV reception. Also, if your reception is still poor, you should also determine if your cables connecting your television set are damaged or frayed. Replacing them can also improve your satellite tv reception.
